FAQ

What are your portrait sessions like?

My family, children, and graduating senior sessions are a combination of a documentary approach in addition to a few more traditionally posed images. I value connection over perfection. So, I aim to capture you, your family, and your children through fun yet planful approach. I will get you interacting with each other and help guide you to capture your most flattering poses. Please feel free to bring a favorite family quilt or blanket to your session. We will be sitting, laying, standing, and walking throughout your session.

What are your branding sessions like?

Before the day of your shoot, we'll speak so I can get to know you, your business, your journey, your values, ideal client, and marketing vision. This will help us be clear on the kinds of photographs that will best serve you as you step into the next chapter of your business.

During our session, we'll create engaging portraits of you, in-action business and lifestyle images, detail shots, and product photography. After our session, you will receive your edited online gallery of images for instant download to start sharing on your marketing platforms. Outside of photography, I bring over a decade of marketing experience to my branding sessions, shooting strategically to maximize your brand’s website and social media content.

What time of day do you book sessions?

If we are shooting in your home, I prefer late morning as that tends to be when homes are best lit. If we are shooting outside, it will either be in the early morning or in the evening. The light is typically too harsh mid day. If your children are up for it, shooting one to two hours before sunset provides beautiful light and atmosphere. The images in my portfolio look they way they do largely due to my use of light and the time of day your session takes place.

What should I wear?

Be Comfortable
Always wear clothes you will be comfortable and confident wearing. Garments that allow movement are definitely a plus, especially for little children. Ideally, your choice of clothing should stand out against the backdrop of the selected location. In the winter, bright cheery colors go a long way against brown landscape.

Don’t Match
The key to looking timeless as a family is to coordinate your clothing choices, but not match them. You should complement each other. Go with 2-3 bright colors and offset them with a few neutrals. Each family member should carry through their own style and really express their personality with their clothing choices. Start with one patterned/print piece and then pull coordinating colors from it.

Layers, Accessories & Textures
Layering and using textures are very important. Adding a scarf, a knit cardigan, hat, pretty hair accessory, colorful shoes, or stylish jewelry is one of the best ways to add color, individuality, and interest to your portrait. Textures in particular add an incredible amount of visual interest to pictures and especially look great in black and white.

Patterns Are OK!
There’s nothing wrong with wearing patterns and stripes. Just make sure they go with the color theme you select and include plenty of neutrals to carry them through. Pair small patterns or big stripes with some textured pieces and you’re set!

Think About Your Shoes
Don’t ignore what goes on your feet. This is the best area to get creative – leather boots, red ballet slippers, sequined Toms.

How do I prepare my kids for the session?

Prepare your child for the session by letting them know a friend will be taking some photos of them. It’s best not surprise them. Make your session the main event for the day. Children are usually not fond of being told to pose or smile. It is best if we just give them time to relax and and try to capture their natural self. Don’t worry if your child is running and active. To get family shots, I guide parents to engage with their children through story telling and other informal games. To get the most out of your session, make sure your little one has rested and had adequate snacks and water. We can take breaks for snack and play, however I will probably keep shooting. Bring dry, non-messy snacks so little faces stay clean.

When can I expect to receive my images?

You may expect to see a sneak peek on Facebook or Instagram within 24-48 hours. If you do not wish to have your images on social media, please let me know. Approximately 2 weeks after your session, you’ll receive an email from me with a link to your online gallery. From this link, you can download images and purchase prints and canvases. If you are interested in an album, prints on glass or other unique ideas, please email me kmbehindthelens@gmail.com.

How do I pay for the session?

You will receive your invoice via PayPal prior to your session. You may either pay online or bring a check or cash to your session. I do not accept credit card payments.

What is included in the session fee?

My portrait rates are all inclusive which means the session fee, professional retouching, and image files for printing and sharing is all included! While I do offer high quality prints, albums and other specialty products through your online gallery, you are not obligated to purchase anything outside of the session fee.
